Christian Formation and Education

The Commission on Ministry is made up of two committees, a Committee on Christian Formation and a Committee on Discernment, each headed by a co-chair of the Commission.

The mission of the Committee on Christian Formation (CCF) is to provide oversight, support, and resources to congregations and individuals in the Episcopal Church in Vermont who are seeking to be transformed for ministry. We do this by collaboration, communication, celebration, documentation, and reflection.

In 2012, the focus of work for the CCF was to

  • develop competencies for ministry profiles based on the Baptismal Promises (BCP, 304);
  • create and offer a liturgical workshop based on competency development;
  • promote formation resources (EfM, seminary on-line courses, Life Cycles, and others) and funding sources to make these resources accessible.

Stay tuned for the 2013 focus of work.

The CCF administers grants for continuing education, for which both clergy and lay persons are eligible. Download a combined application and report form in PDF format here, or in MS Word format here.

Every baptized person is called to ministry. The Education for Ministry (EfM) program provides lay persons with the education to carry out the ministry to which they are called.  In the Baptismal Covenant, we promise to "continue in the apostles' teaching and fellowship...".  EfM offers an opportunity for you to discover how to respond to your call to Christian service.

In addition to regular study of scriptures and the history of the church, EfM sessions provide opportunities for individuals to engage in community-building and theological reflection, thus giving us all the opportunity to engage in discussions about how to carry out ministry in the world. Many participants identify theological reflection as the most important component of EfM: naming the transformations and differences our ministries make in the world.

EfM is a program of The University of the South, School of Theology in Sewanee, TN and has groups throughout the Anglican Communion. EfM is offered on-line and in local/regional groups. Learn more about EfM here.

Diocesan Policy on Training

The Diocese of Vermont strictly prohibits sexual misconduct of any type by any ordained person (deacon, transitional deacon, priest or bishop) canonically resident or functioning in the Diocese of Vermont, or any employee or volunteer authorized to perform work or provide services within the church.

All clergy and lay employees of the church, and all volunteers authorized by the Vestry and clergy person in charge to work on behalf of the congregation in situations that are considered high risk for sexual misconduct (such as church school, individual counseling, youth programs, etc.) will be required to complete and sign an application form which specifically includes a request for personal references, information concerning any prior adjudication in regard to sexual misconduct, and acknowledgment of the church's right to conduct a confidential background check.

Within the first thirty days of employment or assignment, newly elected vestry members and all persons engaged in high risk areas of service will be required to sign a statement indicating that they have read and understand, and intend to comply with, the Diocese of Vermont Policy and Procedures Relating to Sexual Misconduct.

Within the first six months of employment or assignment, all clergy and employees must receive a minimum of six hours of training on issues of sexual harassment and exploitation and the prevention and detection of child sexual abuse in church settings. All persons engaged in high risk areas of service must additionally participate in this training. All such training must be provided or approved by the Province of New England.
